AOSSC members from 9 economies at the Ministry of Research & Technology, Indonesia

Organized by the Indonesian Open Source Association (AOSI) in Jakarta, the Global Conference on Open Source (GCOS) has proven to be one of the most significant OSS events in 2009. A 2-day conference where speakers and panelists gathered to share their views on maximizing the potential of OSS, GCOS offered a valuable opportunity for international collaboration among governments, enterprises, academics and communities to strengthen the position of open source.

With over 600 participants from around the world, the GCOS presented plenary session, discussion and a range of parallel sessions, where speakers shared with panelists their insights on the development OSS and how it could benefit every social spectrum. Various success stories were illustrated regarding the benefits of the adoption of OSS by government bodies and cost-cutting by private sector, while some speakers shared their expertise and experience on overcoming the obstacles in implementing OSS.

GCOS also featured a range of thematic workshops which were framed around topics including education, healthcare, creative industry and Asia OSS Center (AOSSC) collaboration. 13 representatives of the OSS centers from 9 Asia Pacific regions or countries (China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) gathered at the AOSSC workshop to address issues such as the operation of AOSSC, project collaboration, funding model and income sources. All of the representatives were keen to reinforce their partnership to a greater extent and create a more far-reaching impact on the OSS world.
